On November 1, 2010, at 6:45 a.m., Sydney Ramirez, a Kennedy High School Junior and a member of the Kennedy Choir was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured while walking to school.  She was transported to Long Beach Memorial Hospital where surgeons made every effort to save her.  She was taken off life support and passed away at 12:37 a.m. Thursday morning.  3 people were blessed with the gift of her liver, kidneys and lungs.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, November 6 and a car wash, BBQ, bake sale, apron's & jewelry sale was held on on Sunday, November 7.  A special PTSA meeting was held at Kennedy on November 10 and a committee is being formed to interact with the city agencies as they come up with the best solution for this intersection.  The City of La Palma has retained a traffic consulting firm to study the intersection and they expect to receive a report about mid-December.  If there are any additional news or events they will be listed here.
